Piver Skunk Train Gang

Five years ago I was diagnosed with Lymphoma stage 4. Thanks to a lot of great doctors at UCSF and the medical breakthroughs for this disease, I’m happy to say I’m in full remission. Events like this one today will help further medical research and cures for Lymphoma & Leukemia for generations to come. No one knows when something like this will hit your family. We all need to do our part to help fund the advancement of medical research for our future. Thank you for all your support.

Gemma’s Mafia

My name is Sheila and one of the co-team captain’s for Gemma’s Mafia. Gemma is my mother-in-law and she was diagnosed in late 2008 with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Our family was hopeful when we heard that usually CLL patients have “watchful waiting”. Unfortunately, within a year her numbers started to climb faster than anticipated and she was referred to Dr. Kipps at UCSD. They determined that she had a gene deletion (P19) that is more aggressive than most CLL. Dr. Kipps had a trial that was open that was looking at modifying the genes in her white blood cells and reinfusing it back into her. They then followed the infusion with chemotherapy. LLS helped financially support the trial that has recently brought her into remission after a long year of treatment. We found out this awesome news last week! They had told her that without the trial, the percentage of success with just chemo was somewhere between 5-11%. The knowledge of the staff at UCSD and the support of LLS, have created this clinical trial to increase her survival.

This is the main reason that I have decided to do the Light the Night Walk. One of Gemma’s nieces asked me if I wanted to do the walk. I wanted to do it last year, but she was just starting treatment and it seemed all overwhelming. This year it was different. We felt we needed to celebrate and have hope for the future. It has also given the cousins and grandkids an opportunity to feel that they are supporting Gemma in her fight against the leukemia. I think it is great that this walk is family oriented and something we all can do together. It gives us an opportunity to give back to the LLS. We also hope that it will make everyone aware of leukemia, clinical trials and a cure for cancer.
